Pretty hard to resist as a guilty pleasure.. The Reader is a bold and provocative film and one of the most exquisite of 2008.. Wormald lacks Bacon's charisma but Hough has an undeniable star quality, and Teller is a comic delight.. The movie adaptation by screenwriter David Hare and director Stephen Daldry starts out choppy and overdrawn but develops a cumulative power.. It seems more pandering (and dated) than ever.. The movie generally punches the right buttons, at least for the true romantics...
